CBSE Issues New Rules for Class 10 and 12 Board Exam Eligibility

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has laid down fresh conditions for students of Classes 10 and 12 who plan to sit for the board exams. As per the latest notice, both classes are now considered two-year programmes, so students must complete two full years of study in their class to be eligible. On top of that, at least 75% attendance is required.

The board has also stressed that internal assessments are not optional. Introduced under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, these assessments are part of the final evaluation. Anyone who skips them will not receive results and will be placed in the “Essential Repeat” category, even if they are regular students.

There’s also clarity on subjects: Class 10 students can add up to two subjects in addition to the five compulsory ones, while Class 12 students are allowed only one. Schools, however, must get CBSE’s approval before offering extra subjects and ensure they have trained teachers to handle them.

For students who failed earlier exams or were marked under “Compartment” or “Essential Repeat,” there is still the option to reappear as private candidates. But the notice makes it clear: if a student doesn’t meet the mandatory conditions like attendance or internal assessments, they cannot re-register with additional subjects.
